So you're ready to create your web page. Don't worry. It's easier than it looks. Remember that your personal Web page is the place to show off your talents, ideas or just say "hello" on the World Wide Web.*

There are two steps to creating your web page(s). The first step is creating your page(s). The second step is uploading them to the server.

....A little background information...

Web pages are written in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). HTML is a "language" that is used to describe the structure of a web page. All browsers are designed to interpret HTML.

    Now lets begin...

Once you have an idea of what your want on you page(s), you need a way to construct them. You can do this by using a text editor or a HTML editor.

A text editor such as Notepad for (PC's) or Simple Text for (Mac's) allows you to code HTML yourself. This method requires an understanding of HTML.

An HTML editor helps you create a web page by letting you use pre-written templates. In most cases, HTML editors will only require you to write the text and place images in your web page. This is great for creating pages if you don't have any HTML experience. Arachnophilia is one of the available free HTML editors. You can just drag and drop windows documents and it will convert it into a web page.

Step Two: Publishing Your Web Page(s)

....A little background information...

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol, a method of transferring files. With the use of a FTP client, you can copy files from a remote server to your disk, or from your disk to the server.

....Getting the tools...

Now knowing what FTP means, you need FTP client so you can publish your web page(s). For our step by step guide we are using Ace FTP. You can download this program by clicking on the link below.

Now that you have downloaded and installed Ace FTP, you can manage your personal Web and FTP space. Ace FTP allows you to upload and download files, create, delete or rename files and directories, and determine privileges for them. But before you can upload, download or change the contents of your www and ftp directories, you must establish a connection to Cybernet's FTP server.

....Connecting to Cybernet's FTP server...

a) Open Ace FTP.

b) The Session Properties window automatically appears. Select the Host Name you would like to use, if it is your first time click "New". Type in the name that you would like to use for this particular Host e.g. "my web space".

c) In the Host Address box type in the address of the Cybernet Server you will be using

Personal account:www.home.mycybernet.net

d) In the User ID Box type in your username.

e) In the Password Box type in your password.

f) Click OK. Ace FTP will now try and connect to the Cybernet Server where your files are to be stored for viewing on the World Wide Web.

g) Once connected, there will be two distinct windows, one on the left and one on the right. The left represents your computer and files. The right represents the server and its files.

Now that your are connected to Cybernet's FTP server you can publish your site.

h)
Once connected, you can now select the files you want to upload by selecting them in the left window and then clicking the right-arrow in between the two windows. Your files will be uploaded to your folder on the Cybernet server.

**NOTE** it is imperative that your main file be named "index.html" so that when you type in your address this will be the first page to be displayed in the browser.

i) If you want to download files from the server, select the files from the right window and click the left-arrow in between.

j) When you have finished your FTP session, simply close the program until next time.

....
